The main hall (hondo) for the temple built in the imperial villa of the retired emperor Goshirakawa .
builtin the mid-12th century ,themain hall wasdestroyed by fire and rebuilt in the mid-13th
century.
Excluding the portion adve the honzon,thetemple's principle
image of worship ,theinterion of the imposing 118.2 meter main hall employs a keshoyaneura
structure in which there is no ceiling and the roof is visible.
Reflecting the worldview of the Pure Land sect of Senju Kannon,thebodhisattva of compassion.
